We, The Light Photography

Hello! I am Rachel Garrett and I am a therapist here at Denver Mental Health Collective. But you can think of me as a Body Gratitude Advocate and Perfection Crusher. That is, I help adolescents and adults that feel controlled by unwanted habits or behaviors.

Are you struggling to accept yourself as you are? Maybe you’re living in a way that doesn’t feel true to your values. Or you’re just feeling tired of not feeling the way you would like. I can help you walk through these difficult phases of life. We can do this together.

Body Gratitude Advocate

Do you often find yourself criticizing your body? Are you engaging in disordered eating habits? Are you in recovery, but still find it difficult to accept your body and commit to the process? Is your quest for control over your health consuming your thoughts and mind? If so, I can help you feel gratitude for how you function and feel more comfortable living within your body.

I believe all behaviors are an external sign of an internal problem. Therefore, my role is to help you identify what drives your disordered eating habits, low self-esteem, and negative self-talk.

I am here to help you develop a healthy relationship with your body and food. You can live a life of gratitude and joy in the one body you have been given.

“Imperfections are not inadequacies; they are reminders that we’re all in this together.” Brené Brown

Perfection Crusher

Are you aiming for perfection in your relationships, school performance, body, health, workplace, or sport? We were not made for perfection. As long as we are aiming for perfection, we will keep missing the mark. Anxiety, depression, and anger can creep in when we are trying and failing to be perfect.

The good news is that our imperfections can move us toward personal growth. We all have them and our imperfections are the very things that help connect us to others. I am here to assist you to challenge negative self-talk and re-evaluate your standards for yourself and others.

My hope is that you will begin to live a more abundant life as you learn to crush perfection’s damaging influence on your life.

How I Help

Together we will explore the factors contributing to your presenting issues, increase awareness around the issue, identify various ways to reach your goals, and work to eliminate any obstacles that are getting in the way of achieving your highest well-being and freedom.

I use a direct, yet compassionate approach, and highly value the use of humor in the counseling process. Similarly, I use a holistic approach in my work. Which means I believe all aspects of our experience contribute to overall well-being.

I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Narrative Therapy techniques to challenge unhealthy beliefs and help my clients view their struggles as something that does not define them as a person. My role as a therapist is to walk alongside my clients  as they are empowered to make choices that align with their values.

Education & Training

I received my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Denver Seminary and my B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation from Clemson University. Upon completing my Master’s Degree, I worked as a therapist at an Eating Disorder Treatment Center.

I have experience working with adolescents with behavioral and emotional disturbances. And I have completed clinical trainings for the treatment of Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder), Excoriation Disorder (skin picking), and other related Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior (BFRBs).
